Key Visa Features
- No age limit
- ‘Usually resident’ in Australia for a continuous period of at least 5 years immediately before the date of application, including being usually resident as at 19 February 2016
- An income above the Temporary Skilled Migration Income Threshold (TSMIT) (currently $53,900) for each year in the 5-year period
- Meet health, character, security and immigration history criteria
- Exemptions to income requirement available in limited circumstances
Eligible NZ citizens who arrived in Australia before 26 February 2001
If you arrived in Australia prior to 26 February 2001, you may already be considered a permanent resident for the purpose of applying for Australian citizenship. You therefore may not need to apply for permanent residence under this pathway.
Australian Citizenship
New Zealand citizens who are granted this visa are expected to be eligible to apply for Australian citizenship after a period of 12 months (in addition to the five years usually resident in Australia prior to obtaining the Skilled Independent (Subclass 189) visa). The details of the one-year pathway to citizenship are likely to be released later in the year.
