Each year, a growing number of Australians acknowledge that the 26th of January is not an appropriate date for an inclusive celebration of Australia.
The Australia Day public holiday marks the date in 1788 when Captain Arthur Phillip raised the Union Jack in Sydney Cove to claim the land as a British colony. However, the day has painful associations for some Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people whose descendants were living in Australia before the British arrived. Many have marked it as “Invasion Day”.
Roam Migration Law acknowledges that the day is not a day of celebration for all Australians and has joined an increasing number of Australian companies, to offer our employees the option to work on Australia Day public holiday and take the 27th January off in lieu.
