Health – Medical Examinations
Permanent and Provisional visas
Health (medical) examinations are required for all applicants for these visas.
If you have family members (eg. Adult dependent children or children who reside with another parent) who are not migrating with you, they may be asked to take a health examination.
Health examinations are valid for 12 months. We consider the standard processing time of the visa application to determine when you should take health examinations so you only have to take them once. This might mean that we advise you to delay taking health examinations following lodgement of the visa application.
If you took health examinations in the last 12 months, you may not need to take health examinations again.
After lodgement of your visa application, we will provide you (and any family members) a health examinations referral letter containing a HAP ID. You need the HAP ID to arrange your health examinations with BUPA if in Australia or a panel physician overseas.
Temporary visas
Our email to you should have confirmed which applicants for the visa need to take health (medical) examinations. If it did not, or if you include additional applicants to the visa application, whether you/they need examinations will depend on:
- the visa you are applying for
- how long you plan to stay in Australia
- what you plan to do in Australia
- the country you apply from
- any special circumstances that might apply to you
- whether you have any significant medical conditions

Health examinations before visa application
If we have recommended that you take health examinations before lodging the visa application, please use the My Health Declarations (MHD) service to obtain a referral letter for your health examination.
If you did not complete the MHD process before lodgement of your visa, please do not complete it now. Please wait for further instructions from us regarding health examinations.
To use MHD:
- Log into ImmiAccount.
- Find the ‘My Health Declarations’ form.
- Fill out the form and submit it.
- After you submit the form, check for the ‘Organise health examinations’ link. If there is no ‘Organise health examinations’ link, you don’t need to have health examinations.
- Follow the link and complete your medical history.
For more details, see DHA’s guidelines on completing the My Health Declarations form (400KB PDF). If you have any technical difficulties after following the guidelines, use DHA’s ImmiAccount Technical Support Form to contact them.
When you have completed your medical history, you will be provided with a referral letter. The letter will contain your HAP ID. You need the HAP ID to arrange your health examinations with BUPA if in Australia or a panel physician overseas.
