The Department of Employment is seeking feedback on potential changes to the Short-Term Skilled Occupation List (STSOL) to come into effect January 2018.
Effective April 2017, the Skilled Migration Occupation Lists will be updated every 6 and 12 months. The Short-Term Skilled Occupation List (STSOL) will be updated every 6 months, in July and January, while the Medium and Long-Term Strategic Skill Shortage List (MLTSSL) will be updated every 12 months, at the beginning of the financial year.
The Department of Employment will be responsible for undertaking the review process and has developed a ‘Traffic Light’ system to flag potential changes to the list. Occupations on the STSOL have been flagged as likely to be removed or likely to be added to the list. Feedback is currently being sought from stakeholders on the impact of adding and removing these occupations.
The flagged occupations are as follows:

Stakeholder Consultation
The Department of Employment will accept public consultation on the flagged STSOL occupations until 1 December 2017. A draft methodology for the review process has been implemented, and the Department of Employment is seeking submissions including qualitative and quantitative data to better assess the appropriate place of flagged occupations. The current review process focuses on primary factors and secondary factors when making these determinations:
- Primary factors –
- skilled migrant employment outcomes
- reliance on temporary visa holders
- educational attainment of workers compared to ANZSCO skill level
- low visa grant
- projected employment growth for the occupations
- Secondary factors –
- high migration risk
- graduate employment outcomes
- Department of Employment national skill shortage research findings
- ANZSCO not elsewhere classified occupations, and
- age of visa applicants
