Minister for Immigration and Border Protection Scott Morrison has announced the establishment of an Australian Border Force, which will include a merged Department of Immigration and Border Protection and Customs and Border Protection Services. The new service will include the policy, strategy and front line operations of both departments.
The proposed new Australian Border Force will sit alongside the Australian Defence Force, the Australian Federal Police and ASIO. Commentators have raised concerns about the need for an Australian ‘Homeland Security’ service and the longer term consequences of creating a new security agency, in particular scope creep and cost.
